Bhagwat Chandrasekhar: News

One amongst the famed spin quartet of India during the '60s and '70s, Bhagwat Subramanya Chandrasekhar, fondly called Chandra, was one of the most extraordinary leg spinners the world has ever seen. In an India side that starved for victories in Test matches abroad, Chandrasekhar proved to be a bright light. Although a leg spinner by trade, Chandra had an uncanny ability to ball at a pace that unnerved batsmen. He made his Test debut against England in 1964. It was Chandrasekhar's ability to win matches abroad that made him a legendary cricket player. In the 1971 Test against England in the Oval, Chandrasekhar gave India their first win in England with bowling figures of 6/38. 'Wisden' named this performance the "Indian Bowling performance of the century" in 2002. Chandrasekhar played a huge part in giving India their first win in Australia as well in 1978. In the 1977-78 series, he registered identical figures of 6/52 in both innings (for the first time in Test history). Notably, he had 42 wickets in 5 away Test match victories that he was part of.
