What is India's record in T20 World Cup finals?
What's the story
Team India gears up to face New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. A win in this fixture would make India the first team to win three T20 WC titles. On this note, let's take a look at India's previous performances in T20 World Cup finals.

India's triumph in 2007
India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni's captaincy, having defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in the final. Batting first in Johannesburg, India managed 157/5 in 20 overs. Gautam Gambhir scored a majestic 75 off 54 balls, while Rohit Sharma's 16-ball 30* powered the team toward the end. Though Misbah-ul-Haq scored a fighting 43, India narrowly prevailed at the end. RP Singh and Irfan Pathan claimed three wickets each.

The heart-break in 2014
Dhoni's India won five consecutive matches to reach the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup final. However, Sri Lanka got the better of them in the summit clash, which took place in Dhaka. Virat Kohli was India's lone warrior with the bat. He scored a 58-ball 77 when all others failed to connect their shots. The Lankan bowlers choked India in the death overs, restricting them to 130/4. The Lankans easily chased down the total in just 17.5 overs.

Another triumph in 2024
The year 2024 ended India's wait for a second T20 WC title. Under Rohit Sharma's leadership, India beat South Africa by seven runs in the high-voltage final in Barbados. Virat Kohli was the star of the match with a brilliant knock of 76 runs off 59 balls. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya bowled sensational spells as SA fell short. It was indeed a tremendous comeback from Indian bowlers as SA needed a run-a-ball 30 at one stage.
