The club has been in the Bundesliga since its inception and the relegation brings an end to their proud 55-season run in Germany's top flight. Hamburg have won the Bundesliga 6 times.

Hamburg might have beaten Moenchengladbach but Wolfsburg's 4-1 victory over Cologne relegated them.

Relegation means several players will now part ways with the club. Bobby Wood is likely to return to United States to play in the MLS. Wolfsburg now have a chance to retain their spot in the Bundesliga as they will play Holstein Kiel from the second division to determine which team will get a place in Germany's top flight.
