    What's the story

Heather Knight has been asked to step down as captain of the England Women's cricket team after nine years, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a media release.

The ECB's decision comes on the back of a string of disappointing performances in recent tournaments.

Despite stepping down from the captaincy, Knight will remain a contributor as a batter for the team.

    Here's more.

    Performance review

ECB's decision follows disappointing tournament performances

Knight's exit from her captaincy comes days after Jon Lewis resigned as head coach of the England women's team.

The ECB has asked Knight to resign after England's disappointing outing in last year's T20 World Cup in UAE, where they were knocked out in the group stage.

This was followed by a 16-0 defeat in the Women's Ashes series against Australia earlier this year.

    Captaincy highlights

Knight's captaincy marked by significant victories and records

Knight took over as captain in 2016 and led England to their home World Cup victory in 2017, with an exhilarating win over India.

She also led the team to finals in ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2018 and Women's World Cup 2022 in New Zealand.

Under her captaincy, the team achieved an incredible 134 wins, including eight record-breaking series wins in ODIs over her tenure.

    Personal reflection

Knight reflects on her captaincy journey

Looking back at her captaincy, Knight said she was immensely proud of her time.

She said, "Captaining my country for the last nine years has been the biggest honor of my life and I will look back on my tenure with an enormous sense of pride."

Although she is stepping down from the helm, she will continue to support the team and its new captain.

    CEO statement

Meanwhile, Richard Gould, the Chief Executive Officer of ECB, thanked Knight for her contributions during her time as captain.

He said that her influence went beyond the pitch and inspired many women and girls to get involved in cricket.

Gould also looked forward to seeing Knight continue playing for England as one of the world's best batters.

    Future plans

    Knight's future in cricket

Knight's future in cricket still looks bright.

She made her England debut in 2010 and became the first England men's or women's player to score an international century across all three formats of the game, a decade later.

With her wealth of experience and consistent performance, she is sure to continue making big contributions to the sport.

    Stats

A look at Knight's captaincy stats

Knight led England in 94 WODI matches. She helped her side win 62 matches. England lost 29 matches and three games didn't have any result.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Knight also led England in 96 WT20Is. She won 71 and lost 23. One match was tied with one not having a result.
