KL Rahul to lead India in SA ODIs: Report
What's the story
KL Rahul is all set to return as India's ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, according to PTI. The decision comes after Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a more severe neck injury than initially thought. Rahul's return marks his first stint as captain in over two years. He last led India during their tour of South Africa in December 2023.
Injury update
Gill's injury more complicated than initially diagnosed
Gill's neck injury, which he sustained while batting in the first Test in Kolkata, was initially thought to be minor. However, it has turned out to be more complicated than expected. He missed the second Test match in Guwahati and is now undergoing scans and consultations in Mumbai. BCCI officials have hinted that the issue could be muscular or nerve-related rather than just a neck spasm.
Recovery prospects
Gill's recovery timeline and T20I availability uncertain
Gill has been given an injection to relieve symptoms and will need rest before starting rehabilitation. There is a good chance he might also miss the T20I series starting December 9. He recently consulted spinal specialist Dr. Abhay Nene, with findings sent to chief selector Ajit Agarkar. With his fitness still uncertain, the management has decided against risking him for ODIs or T20Is.
Captaincy choice
Rahul emerges as the most viable option for captaincy
Despite Rishabh Pant's name being considered for the role, his lack of recent ODI cricket experience (having played just one 50-over match in a year) weakened his case. This leaves Rahul, India's first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs and former ODI captain, as the most feasible option to lead the side. With vice-captain Shreyas Iyer still two months away from returning after a rib cage injury sustained in Australia, selectors are leaning toward stability with Rahul at helm.
Information
Rahul has led India in 12 ODIsĀ
Rahul, who was once the vice-captain of the Indian team across formats, has led the Men in Blue in 12 ODIs. This has resulted in eight wins and four defeats. The keeper-batter has also captained the team in T20Is and Test matches.
