Silver King dies in-ring, fans thought it part of show

What's the story

Lucha wrestler Silver King suffered an unfortunate demise in the ring. The incident happened during the match, Greatest Show of Lucha Libre at the Roundhouse in Camden, London. After he lost the match, King was carried away from the ring, while fans thought this all was a part of the show. Hours later, it was confirmed that Silver King had passed away.

Who is Silver King?

César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón, aka Silver King, was a Mexican professional wrestler and an actor. He started his wrestling career with Los Cowboys in 1990, while he also had a stint with WCW from 1997-2000. Although he never won a championship in WCW, he has won accolades across wrestling houses. In 2006, he starred in the movie, Nacho Libre, as a villain.

As the wrestling community reels from the shocking quietus of Silver King, he is not the first wrestler who has passed away in the ring. The list of the same is huge, while the most notable one is of WWE wrestler Owen Hart. He had passed away in a WWE ring after falling off a zip-line during an entrance at a pay-per-view.

Former WCW president saddened by Silver King's death

As WCW was later owned by WWE, their former president Eric Bischoff, who had worked closely with Silver King, too expressed his grief. WCW and WWE, have a great affiliation for Lucha wrestlers. "Like so many of the great Luchadores that helped Americans appreciate Lucha Libre and make Nitro [a WCW flagship show] the success it was, he will be missed," added Bischoff.
