What's the story

Shubman Gill, India's Test captain, has reached his 10th century in Test cricket. The 26-year-old achieved this milestone on the second day of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium. Gill scored an unbeaten 196-ball 129 as India declared at 518/5 while batting first. On this note, we look at the Indian batters to hammer the most Test tons in a calendar year as a designated skipper.

#1

Shubman Gill - 5 in 2025

Gill took over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma earlier this year and has been a force to reckon with. He scored four centuries (including a double ton) in the England series, which marked his maiden leadership Test assignment. The one in Delhi was his fifth Test hundred in just 12 innings as captain. Playing his seventh Test as captain, Gill has now raced to 933 runs at a fine average of 84.81 (50: 1).

#2

Virat Kohli - 5 in 2017

Virat Kohli is the only other Indian skipper with more than four Test hundreds in a calendar year. He accomplished the feat for the first time in 2017. The year saw him smoke five tons - 1 versus Bangladesh and 4 versus Sri Lanka. Three of these tons were also converted into scores of 200 or more. Kohli finished the year with 1,059 runs from 10 Tests (16 innings) at a stunning average of 75.64 (50: 1).

#3

Virat Kohli - 5 in 2018

Captain Kohli continued his dream run in Tests in 2018 - a year that saw India play Tests in three SENA nations. He slammed five centuries in that year as well, with four of them coming away from home - 1 in South Africa, 1 in Australia, and 2 in England. His solitary home hundred that year came against West Indies. Kohli topped the Test run-scoring charts in 2018, hammering 1,322 runs from 13 Tests at 55.08 (50s: 5).
