Imran Khan vows to make Pakistan the best cricket team

Pakistan cricket team bowed out of the league stage in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2019. The Sarfraz Ahmed-led side finished fifth in the 10-team event. They missed out on qualifying for semis on the basis of Net Run Rate (NRR). In the same light, Prime Minister and former cricket skipper Imran Khan has vowed to produce the best cricket team.

How was the World Cup 2019 for Pakistan?

The Men in Green finished with 11 points alongside eventual runners-up New Zealand, but the NRR came into play. After a poor start, Pakistan won their final four games on the trot. But that wasn't enough to seal a berth in the semis. Their campaign had several positives though, including wins over both finalists England and New Zealand in the league stage.

    Imran addresses Pakistani-Americans

Pakistan PM Imran Khan is currently in USA. He is set to meet US President Donald Trump. While addressing a gathering of Pakistani-Americans at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington DC, Imran stated that he wants to see Pakistan cricket team back at the top. Earlier, Imran was seen constantly backing the side during the World Cup.

'We have started working on developing the best cricket team'

"We have started working on developing the best cricket team of the world for the next edition, by bringing the best players in the team. Remember my words," said Imran while addressing the crowd.

What were the takeaways for Pakistan from CWC 19?

The major takeaway for Pakistan from CWC 19 is that they have several promising youngsters in their ranks. Babar Azam was superb and scored emphatically (478 runs). The likes of Imam-ul-Haq, Haris Sohail and Imad Wasim chipped in. Left-arm pacers Mohammad Amir (17 wickets) and teenager Shaheen Afridi (16 scalps) were terrific. Pakistan should base their team around these names.

Can Pakistan become the world's best team?

With Imran prioritizing Pakistani cricket, one feels this could help the side in a major way. Pakistan need to be lauded for showing heart and courage during CWC 19. They were under tremendous pressure, but the players fought back under Sarfaraz Ahmed. Pakistan have identified key players and youngsters will hold the key. However, the path to the top won't be easy.
