Pranav Dhanawade: From scoring 1,009 runs to quitting cricket

Pranav Dhanawade, the youngster who scripted history by scoring 1,009 runs in an innings, has reportedly stopped playing cricket due to slump in his form. His father has also returned the scholarship of Rs. 10,000 per month given by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) saying that they can start the scholarship once Pranav gets back in form. Here are the details.

    Pranav Dhanawade: Player profile

Pranav Dhanawade is a 17-year-old cricketer from Mumbai who created record for scoring 1,009* runs off 323 balls in an innings in January 2016 during an inter-school cup tournament organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association. In his unbeaten historic knock, he scored 129 fours and 59 sixes, playing for 395 minutes. He is the world's only batsman to score 1000-plus runs in an innings.

    The flip-side of fame

Pranav's historic 1,009-run knock put him under the limelight and his every move from there on was followed. His every match discussed and scrutinised. All the attention and expectations brought along with it, the performance pressure. According to his coach, the achievement is actually weighing him down. He hasn't scored big ever since and has even lost his contract with Air India team.

Fails to get into Mumbai U-19 probables

Without much going right for him, Pranav also failed to make the final cut for the Mumbai U-19 probables list.

    Why return the scholarship?

MCA sanctioned Pranav a scholarship of Rs. 10,000 per month for a period of five years. Owing to his non-performance Pranav's father Prashant and coach Mobin Shaikh, decided to return the scholarship. "We don't want accusations of him accepting the scholarship and not doing anything. The aim is to play high level cricket but not at cost of integrity," said the coach.
