Shubman Gill misses training session: Will he play in Guwahati?
What's the story
The availability of Indian captain Shubman Gill for the 2nd Test against South Africa, starting November 22, is in doubt. As per the latest reports, he missed a recent practice session, including nets. Gill had suffered a neck injury during his innings in the series opener at Kolkata and didn't participate in the second innings either. His absence left Rishabh Pant to take over as captain for that game.
Injury details
Gill's injury and potential absence from 2nd Test
Gill was injured while batting on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. He retired hurt after injuring his neck while slog sweeping Simon Harmer for a boundary. The star batter was immediately attended by the team physio and taken to a Kolkata hospital for medical scans. He was discharged a day later, shortly after India's defeat in the series opener.
Recovery advice
Gill advised to avoid flying, rest for 4 days
Sources from the Cricket Association of Bengal told PTI that Gill has been advised to rest for four days and avoid flying. This means he is unlikely to travel with the Indian team to Guwahati for the 2nd Test match. However, his progress is being monitored daily, and a final decision will be made by Tuesday.
Match
Gill's absence hurts India
Gill's absence was felt in the final innings as India, chasing just 124 runs, faltered. They succumbed to the deteriorating Kolkata pitch and fell to spinners. In what appeared to be a modest run-chase, the hosts folded for 93. Only Washington Sundar (31) and Axar Patel (26) scored 20-plus runs. With a 30-run win, South Africa lead the two-match series 1-0.
Backup plans
What if Gill is ruled out?
As reported earlier in the day, the Indian team management has recalled all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to the Test squad. He was earlier released to play the white-ball series for India A against South Africa A. If Gill misses out, he is a potential option for the Guwahati Test. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan can also be slotted back to No. 3. Pant will lead the side in Gill's absence.
