What's the story

India's Sanju Samson has flipped the record books by smashing a blistering 89 against New Zealand in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Samson, who gave India a blazing start, recorded another 50-plus score after scoring a match-winning 89 against England in the semi-final. He could have become the first-ever centurion in the T20 World Cup finals.

Century

Samson surpasses these players

According to ESPNcricinfo, Samson now has the highest individual score in the T20 World Cup finals. The previous-highest score in this regard was 85* by West Indies' Marlon Samuels in the 2016 final. New Zealand's Kane Williamson also scored 86 in the 2021 final. Notably, no other batter has scored 80-plus runs in a T20 World Cup final.

Landmark

Shining in both semi-final and final

Samson became the third player to score a half-century in the semi-finals and finals of a T20 World Cup edition. He joined Pakistan's Shahid Afridi (in 2009) and India's Virat Kohli (in 2014). Notably, Samson scored an impressive 89 runs off just 42 balls against England in the semi-final. Before that, he hammered an unbeaten 97 against West Indies, taking India to the semis.
