What's the story

South Africa's cricket team captain Temba Bavuma has said the format of the Champions Trophy is tougher than the World Cup. He explained it is because there are fewer matches in the former, which doesn't give much room for the teams to bounce back from a slow start. The upcoming ICC Champions Trophy is set to begin in Pakistan on February 19.

Tournament strategy

Bavuma on South Africa's Champions Trophy aspirations

Bavuma emphasized the team's ambitions for the forthcoming tournament. "Obviously, we have our sights on where we want to be in the Champions Trophy this time but the format makes it more challenging for teams when you look at the 50-over World Cup," he said in a press conference. South Africa will face Afghanistan in their opening match in Karachi on February 21.

Squad update

South Africa's squad faces challenges ahead of Champions Trophy

South Africa, the T20 World Cup 2024 runners-up and the finalists of the upcoming World Test Championship, are currently playing a Tri Series with Pakistan and New Zealand. However, their squad is not at full strength as a few players are yet to join them after the recently concluded SA20. Despite these challenges, Bavuma remains optimistic about the team's performance.

Optimism

Bavuma sees opportunity in squad challenges

Bavuma sees the current scenario as a chance for new players to make their mark. He said, "It is a lovely opportunity for a couple of guys who have been doing well in domestic cricket and in T20 leagues to make a statement on what value they can add to the team." He also expressed faith in spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi to strengthen the team during the Champions Trophy.

Bowling strength

Bavuma comments on team's bowling resources

Despite the unfortunate absence of pacer Anrich Nortje from the tournament, Bavuma is confident in South Africa's bowling resources. He mentioned Corbin Bosch as a valuable asset, stating, "We have bowlers who can bowl at high pace with the new ball and also get some shape." This statement underscores his faith in the team's ability to perform well in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
