#CoronavirusOutbreak: A look at the ATP Rankings after freezing

In tennis, the ATP has extended its suspension period until June 7 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. With this decision, the European clay-court season has been called off which also includes the second Grand Slam of the year, French Open. Taking the players' rankings into consideration, the board has decided to freeze the same. Here's more.

ATP has decided to not drop any points

The ATP has decided to not drop any points earned by the players as of March 8, 2020. Therefore, when the season starts in June, players will go in with the same rankings. However, if the coronavirus threat continues, then the season could get further postponed. The first tournament to get called off was the Indian Wells Masters and WTA events.

Djokovic and Nadal to start as top two

Djokovic lifted the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title on February 29 and saw his points tally surge to 10,220 ATP points. He could start the season on grass at Stuttgart or 's-Hertogenbosch. Meanwhile, Spaniard Rafael Nadal will start with 9,850 points under his belt. It's a major blow for Rafa, who will miss the entire clay-court season.

Federer benefits largely from the break

After having a surgery in February, veteran ace Roger Federer said he will be eyeing the Wimbledon 2020 as a platform to return back. The Swiss maestro will benefit largely from this break. Federer will resume on 6,630 points and is placed fourth after Dominic Thiem (7,045). Fededer is expected to resume his season at the Halle Open.

Medvedev will be eyeing to surpass Federer's tally

Russia's Daniil Medvedev will be ranked number five with 5,890 points. At present, he is just 65 points behind veteran Federer and can surpass the Swiss if he chooses to play the ATP 250 event and wins a handful of matches there. Also, this can happen if Federer doesn't feature and win before Medvedev.
