What's the story

More than 150,000 Canadians have signed a petition demanding the revocation of Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship. The petition was started by British Columbia author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus. It accuses Musk of acting against Canada's national interests owing to his advisory role to US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to turn Canada into the 51st state of the US.

Accusations detailed

Petition accuses Musk of undermining Canada's national interest

Musk made multiple comments on Canadian politics via his social media platform X last month. He also strongly supported Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and labeled outgoing PM Justin Trudeau an "insufferable tool." The petition says that "Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada" by advising a foreign government seeking to erase Canadian sovereignty. As of late Sunday, the petition has received around 157,000 signatures, exceeding the 500 needed for presentation in House of Commons.

Role examined

Musk's advisory role to Trump under scrutiny

Musk's advisory role to Trump includes advocating for federal spending cuts affecting US civil servants from the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Defense, Health and Human Services, the Internal Revenue Service, and the National Parks Service, among others. The petition asks Trudeau to revoke Musk's citizenship with immediate effect. The petition will be presented to the House of Commons once a new session begins.

House of Commons

House of Commons is scheduled to reopen on March 24

Musk, who was born in Pretoria, South Africa, is a citizen of Canada through his mother, who is from Regina, Saskatchewan. He heads the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The House of Commons is scheduled to reopen on March 24, but a general election is predicted before MPs return. The petition states that it will be gathering signatures until June 20.
