Trump golf club shooting: How suspect was tracked down
Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man from North Carolina, has been identified as the suspect in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf club. The incident occurred on Sunday when Routh allegedly fired several shots toward Trump's location from a concealed position in nearby bushes. A witness at the scene spotted Routh and alerted law enforcement to his black Nissan getaway vehicle, leading to his swift arrest.
Advanced technology and witness aid in suspect's capture
Officials used advanced technological systems to track down and arrest the suspect, reports said. The Palm Beach County Sheriff, Ric Bradshaw, commended the Secret Service agents for their immediate action following the incident. "The Secret Service did exactly what they should have done...they provided exactly what the protection should be...their agent did a fantastic job," Bradshaw said. He also revealed that Routh was positioned 400 to 500 yards away from Trump, concealed within shrubbery while Trump played golf nearby.
Suspect's belongings and initial charges revealed
At the scene, law enforcement found an AK-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks hanging on a fence, and a GoPro camera. The backpacks contained ceramic tile. State Attorney for Palm Beach County, Dave Aronberg, stated that Routh will initially face state-level charges. "Our filing of the warrant and charges at the state level does not preclude the federal charges that could be coming," Aronberg said.
Routh's criminal history and political leanings
Routh has a significant criminal record, including charges for driving without a license, carrying a concealed weapon, hit and run, and possession of stolen goods. He has been on probation for all these offenses. Since 2019, he has exclusively donated to Democratic candidates and causes. Despite supporting Trump in 2016, Routh later criticized him on social media platforms. Further investigation is underway.
