'Sensational developments' to come in UK extradition case: Nirav Modi
What's the story
Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, who has been in a United Kingdom prison for over six years, has hinted at "sensational developments" in his extradition case. The 54-year-old diamond merchant is wanted in India in the estimated ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case. He made the revelation during a court appearance before High Court Judge Simon Tinkler at London's Royal Courts of Justice on Friday.
Court proceedings
Modi's extradition appeal to be heard next month
Modi was appearing in court for a separate case involving an unpaid $8 million debt to the Bank of India. He is currently seeking a stay on these proceedings, which are scheduled for trial in January 2026. His extradition appeal will be heard next month after the Indian authorities file their response. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that Modi "has lodged an application to reopen his (extradition) appeal."
Trial preparations
Concerns raised over Modi's medical issues
During the court proceedings, Modi represented himself as a "litigant in person" and spoke about his medical issues and difficulties accessing a computer in prison. He argued these factors make a fair trial impossible. The judge acknowledged these concerns but said there was enough time to accommodate them before the January trial. A confidential medical report was submitted to the judge, noting that some medical issues could affect Modi's ability to participate in the trial without reasonable adjustments.
Extradition order
Judge assures access to computer for Modi
The judge also noted that prison authorities are arranging access to a computer for Modi within a week. Despite his concerns about being moved from HMP Thameside to HMP Pentonville, the judge ensured all necessary paperwork would be transferred, or he would be returned to Thameside soon. In April 2021, then UK home secretary Priti Patel had ordered Modi's extradition after establishing a prima facie case against him in India.
