Prince William recalls conversations with children about Kate's cancer battle
What's the story
Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently opened up about how he and his wife, Kate Middleton (Princess of Wales), have been communicating with their children during challenging times. This includes discussing Middleton's cancer diagnosis and recovery, along with King Charles III's ongoing battle with cancer. "We choose to communicate a lot more with our children...most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn't work," he said in an interview during his recent visit to Brazil.
Family dynamics
'It's very individual...moment-dependent'
During an interview with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck in Rio de Janeiro, he was asked how he and Middleton have been coping with their family's recent challenges. William emphasized that every family has its own unique challenges. "It's very individual and sort of moment-dependent as to how you deal with those problems," he added. He was in Brazil to celebrate the fifth Earthshot Prize, which honors individuals who have proposed solutions for global issues.
Parenting approach
'Sometimes you feel you're oversharing with the children'
William, who is a father to Prince George (12), Princess Charlotte (10), and Prince Louis (7), said, "Sometimes you feel you're oversharing with the children." But he added that most of the time, not being honest with them doesn't work. "Explaining how they feel, why that's happening...helps give them a bigger picture and they can relax more into it rather than being really anxious about 'what are you hiding from me?'"
Parenting challenges
'No manual for being a parent...'
William acknowledged the challenges of parenting, saying, "It's always a balancing act. How much do I say? What do I say? When do I say it?" He added, "There's no manual for being a parent, you've just got to go with it." The Princess of Wales announced her cancer remission in January, while King Charles is still undergoing treatment.
Digital safety
We don't allow our children to have phones, reveals William
In the same interview, William revealed that he and Middleton do not allow their kids to have phones. "It's really hard. Our children don't have phones... I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he might have a phone that has limited access," he said. He expressed concerns about children's internet access, saying they can come across too much unnecessary content online.
