All EVs in India will soon need to make sounds

Auto

India is making it official: all electric vehicles (EVs) will need to come with sound alerts called AVAS by October 2026 for new models, and by October 2027 for existing ones.
The government announced this move on September 29, aiming to make roads safer as EVs get more popular.

Why the sound requirement?

EVs are super quiet, which sounds cool—until you realize pedestrians and cyclists often can't hear them coming.
Studies show EVs are up to 50% more likely to be involved in pedestrian accidents at low speeds compared to regular cars.
The new rule means EVs will play artificial sounds below 20km/h, helping everyone stay alert and safe.
Plus, India's catching up with global standards, so the next time you spot a Tata Currv or MG Comet gliding by, don't be surprised if you actually hear it coming!
