Launched in 1999, Maruti WagonR achieves 35L production milestone
What's the story
Maruti Suzuki has announced a major achievement with its popular WagonR model, which has crossed the 3.5 million mark in cumulative production in India. The landmark figure, achieved over three generations, puts the WagonR in an exclusive club of models such as Alto and Swift to achieve this scale in the country. The model is currently manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's plants in Gurugram and Manesar, Haryana.
Global impact
WagonR's journey and global presence
Launched in December 1999, the WagonR has been a staple on Indian roads for over 25 years. Its tall-boy design, roomy interiors, and fuel-efficient engines have struck an emotional chord with customers. Globally, the WagonR nameplate has an even longer history. It was first launched in Japan in 1993 and is now manufactured across several markets including India, Hungary, and Indonesia. As of August 2025, global cumulative sales of Suzuki WagonR had crossed the one crore mark.
Model evolution
WagonR's evolution and safety features
The latest Indian version of the WagonR is based on Suzuki's fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. It comes with six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, and Electronic Stability Program. The car also features a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, making it a modern family hatchback. Notably, the model has been India's best-selling car for four consecutive financial years according to industry data.
New variant
WagonR's new accessibility-oriented variant
Recently, Maruti Suzuki expanded the WagonR lineup with a new accessibility-oriented variant. The model comes with a swivel seat to make it easier for senior citizens and people with disabilities to use. The system retains the original factory-installed seat and can be fitted without any changes to the car's structure or mechanical components. With an installation time of roughly an hour, it offers a convenient enhancement rather than an extensive modification.
