Porsche 718 Boxster, Cayman to get 911 model's flat-six engine

Porsche is planning to give a major update to its combustion-engine 718 Boxster and Cayman models. The company has indicated that the new "top" versions of these cars could potentially be fitted with the same flat-six engine found in its iconic 911. This move comes as part of a broader strategic shift within the company, announced by CEO Oliver Blume.

Blume described the change as a "strategic realignment," which also includes a major shift in the company's electric strategy. The plan has also seen the cancellation of the upcoming 'K1' electric SUV flagship and an extension of ICE Cayenne and Panamera models into the 2030s. Porsche will also stop development on its 'Sport' version of Volkswagen Group's SSP platform, which was supposed to support these new models.

Blume on production similarities between models
Blume said, "We have seen a clear drop in demand for exclusive battery-electric cars and we are taking that into account." This statement highlights Porsche's response to evolving consumer preferences. The company is now looking at bringing more similarities between the 718 and 911 models, especially when it comes to powertrains. This strategy would simplify production and component sourcing while boosting economies of scale.
Engine transition
End of 4-cylinder era?
The new "top" versions of the 718 models are likely to be the hardcore Spyder RS and GT4 RS, which will sit above the incoming 718 EVs. However, this shift could also mean an end to the four-cylinder era for these cars. The turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine currently used in these models doesn't meet Euro 7 emissions regulations that come into effect at the end of 2026.
