These are first owners of Tesla Model Y in Gurugram
What's the story
Tesla has started delivering its Model Y electric vehicles (EVs) in Gurugram. The first batch of deliveries was made at the company's new facility in the city, which opened on November 26. Among the adopters were Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma and former Zomato CEO Rakesh Ranjan. Since mid-July, when the bookings opened, Tesla has sold 140 units in India this year.
Facility
Tesla's new Gurugram facility offers comprehensive services
The Gurugram center is Tesla's third facility in India, following its experience centers in Mumbai and Delhi. However, unlike the previous ones that were mainly for display and brand familiarization, this new center provides consultations, bookings, and test-drive support. This marks a major shift toward a more structured retail network for the company in India.
Pricing
Model Y variants and pricing in India
Tesla launched two imported variants of the Model Y in India, priced at ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh respectively. Both models are shipped from Shanghai and attract a 70% import duty, making them nearly 30% more expensive than their US counterparts. This pricing strategy reflects Tesla's premium positioning for its EVs in the Indian market.
Leadership profile
Gurugram center led by industry veteran
The Gurugram center is headed by Sharad Agarwal, who took over in November. Agarwal is a former head of Lamborghini India and senior sales executive at Audi India. His appointment underscores Tesla's commitment to bolstering its premium EV footprint in the country. Under Agarwal's leadership, the Gurugram facility will play a key role in Tesla's expansion plans for the country.
