    What's the story

    Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will visit Bengaluru next week for a company event, in his first trip to India's Silicon Valley since taking office in Feb'14.

    The Mangalore University alumnus will hold discussions on digital transformation, artificial intelligence; and will be joined by Nandan Nilekani in a seminar on 'winning in the cloud-first, mobile-first world'.

    Sex racket

    'Wrong number' helps NGO worker bust prostitution racket

    Syed Abbas, who provided police information on a prostitution racket, discovered about its existence after receiving calls from unknown numbers seeking Amjad, and asking if he could provide girls or needed them.

    After receiving many similar calls, Abbas pretended to be Amjad and invited a woman caller to a specified location with her girls.

    Police nabbed the woman, who led them to others involved.

    Bellandur Lake

    Fire at Bellandur due to 'chemical reaction in sludge'

    Prima facie examinations by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board revealed that the fire on Bellandur Lake was caused due to a chemical reaction in the sludge, which is suspected to have released incendiary methane gas. However, final tests results are awaited.

    Residents have complained several times about illegal dumping of chemicals and garbage into the lake, but no action was taken.

    Tumakuru

    HAL to build its largest chopper at Tumakuru

    Hindustan Aeronautics Limited signed an MoU with the Public Works Department for infrastructure development at its facility in Tumakuru, where it plans to build its largest and heaviest helicopter - the 12.5-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone on January 3, 2016.

    The 615-acre plot will have production and testing facilities, and will provide employment to 4,000 locals.

    Aluminium 'tawa'

    "Poor don't use aluminium tawas, won't be exempted from VAT"

    Karnataka has declared that the aluminium ('non-stick') tawa is not used by the poor, hence it can't be exempted from the State Value Added Tax Act.

    One of CM Siddaramaiah's 2016-17 budget sop said, "Exempt aluminium household utensils other than pressure cookers and cutlery for the benefit of the poor."

    A Bengaluru firm had requested clarification, saying the non-stick tawa is commonly used nowadays.
