Airtel might offer free Netflix subscription via Airtel TV app

According to reports, Airtel might soon offer a free Netflix subscription to users of its Airtel TV app. The telecom company is reportedly in talks with Netflix to bring its content catalog on the Airtel TV app. Airtel already provides users a free subscription to Amazon Prime and it has recently also partnered with Hotstar to broaden the scope of content on the app.

Airtel and Netflix are holding advanced discussions

"Netflix and Airtel are in advanced discussions for an exclusive tie-up to offer Netflix content to Airtel mobile customers. Several rounds of discussions have been completed between the two companies and the deal could be announced in the coming weeks," a source said.

You'll have to pay for data you consume watching Netflix

It should be kept in mind that while access to Netflix through the Airtel TV app would be free, users would still have to pay for the data that they consume since all the content is streamed online. Notably, Airtel and Netflix are already collaborating since 2017 to make the Netflix app available on Airtel internet and direct-to-home service platforms.

Airtel TV app wants to strategically defeat Jio TV app

The move could be aimed at one-upping rival Reliance Jio which offers access to content from Voot, Zee 5, Yupp TV, Sony LIV, and Hotstar via its Jio TV app. Netflix launched in India in 2016. It currently hosts over 125 million hours of video content including original series, documentaries, and feature films. Its pricing starts from Rs. 500 per month.
