What's the story

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) start-up DeepSeek has raised over 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) in its first funding round. The investment values the company at over $50 billion, The Information reported on Tuesday. The deal structure was unusual as it was designed to preserve founder Liang Wenfeng's control over the company while securing significant capital from investors.

Investment strategy

Some investors are subject to a 5-year lock-up period

The funding round required investors to invest their money in a limited partnership managed by DeepSeek CEO Liang Wenfeng, instead of directly investing in DeepSeek. This unique structure was designed to keep control with the founder while securing capital from outside investors. Some investors are subject to a five-year lock-up period and do not have voting rights.

Exception noted

National AI fund retains voting rights

The only exception to the lock-up and voting rights condition is China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund. The fund has directly invested in DeepSeek, retaining both voting rights and exemption from the lock-up period. This exception highlights the strategic importance of DeepSeek in China's national AI landscape.

Financial commitments

Wenfeng has invested 20 billion yuan

Wenfeng has reportedly invested 20 billion yuan of his own money in this funding round. Tech giant Tencent is also said to be considering an investment of 10 billion yuan, while battery manufacturer CATL is looking at a potential investment of 5 billion yuan. If these investments go through, they would make Tencent and CATL the largest external investors in DeepSeek.

International acclaim

DeepSeek's rise as national AI champion

DeepSeek became China's national AI champion and gained international recognition early last year. Its V3 and R1 models were widely praised in Silicon Valley, challenging US perceptions of China's AI capabilities. This global acclaim has further cemented DeepSeek's position as a leading player in the international AI landscape.
