EU advances major free trade agreement proposal with India
The European Union is moving forward with a major free-trade agreement (FTA) proposal with India, aiming to make business smoother between the two regions.
If approved, this would be their biggest trade deal yet: reducing tariffs, opening up markets, and setting clear rules for trade and investment.
The agreement still needs to be signed off by the European Parliament, the Council, and India before it becomes official.
EU India annual trade €180 billion
Trade between the EU and India already tops €180 billion each year, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs.
With the new FTA, tariffs on 96% of EU goods could be cut or scrapped entirely, potentially saving European exporters €4 billion annually.
This means easier market access for businesses in both regions and more choices at better prices for Indian consumers.
Deal builds closer EU India partnership
This deal is also part of the EU's plan to strengthen ties with India and boost its presence in the Indo-Pacific region, especially as global trade faces new challenges.
It's all about building a closer economic partnership.
