Foreign portfolio investors pulled record ₹1.53L/cr from India in FY26
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) yanked out a record ₹1.53 lakh crore from Indian markets in FY 2026, flipping the script from big investments seen just a year or two ago.
Even though this number sounds huge, it's only about 2.1% of their total holdings here, so most of their money is still parked in India.
Stocks drove FPIs exits, debt inflows
Most of the withdrawals hit stocks, thanks to global tensions, worries about US tariffs, and weak company earnings.
March 2026 was especially rough, with FPIs pulling out nearly ₹1.17 lakh crore that month alone.
On the flip side, debt markets actually saw some love: FPIs put in ₹25,807 crore there, supported by residual passive flows linked to India's inclusion in the J.P. Morgan bond index.
Sectors like IT and finance saw big exits, while capital goods and telecom attracted new FPI interest.
