Global crude steel production up 0.3% in August: World Steel

Business

In August 2025, global crude steel production ticked up by just 0.3% compared to last year, reaching 145.3 million tons, according to the World Steel Association.
Despite this slight annual rise, output actually dropped from July to August as producers adjusted to shifting markets and new trade rules.

Country-specific trends

China—the world's steel giant—saw its output dip by 0.7%.
Meanwhile, India made headlines with a big 13.2% jump in production, hitting 14.1 million tons.
The US also managed a modest increase of 3.2%.
On the flip side, Germany's numbers rose by 10.5%, and Japan, South Korea, and Russia all posted declines too.

Regional breakdown of production

Asia and Oceania stayed steady with a small boost overall, while West Asia surprised everyone with a huge 21.5% surge in production.
But not everywhere saw gains: Africa and South America both slipped into negative territory, and the European Union's output shrank as well—even though other European countries managed slight growth.
North America nudged upward too, showing just how mixed things are for steel around the world right now.
