India to drive energy demand growth by 2035: IEA report
India is on track to become the world's top driver of energy demand growth by 2035, according to a new International Energy Agency (IEA) report.
The country's energy needs are set to jump sharply—right alongside China and Southeast Asia—thanks to rapid economic growth.
But this also means India faces big challenges, like moving away from fossil fuels and making sure everyone has fair access to energy.
IEA's World Energy Outlook released during COP30
The IEA's World Energy Outlook, released during COP30 in Brazil, explores three possible futures for global energy.
In the most optimistic scenario (STEPS), renewables could make up 55% of total energy share by 2035.
But if things move slower (CPS), we could see a dangerous 3°C temperature rise by 2100.
Even with more renewables and less coal use ahead, the report warns that none of these scenarios fully solve climate risks—so there's still lots of work ahead for a cleaner and fairer energy future.
