India's insurance industry hit hard by cyberattacks in FY25

India's top insurance companies—like Star Health, Niva Bupa, HDFC Life, Tata AIG, and LIC—were hit by major cyberattacks in 2024 and 2025.
The biggest shock was at Star Health, where hackers accessed data from 31 million customers—the largest breach ever seen in India's health insurance sector.

IRDAI has come up with stricter rules for insurers

These attacks happened because of weak spots like outdated software and poor encryption.
No one's been caught yet, but the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has jumped in with stricter rules: now insurers must report any incident within six hours and keep a close eye on their tech systems 24/7.
They also have to save log data for 180 days to help track down future threats.
The hope is these changes will make things safer for everyone going forward.
