What's the story

India's leading airline IndiGo has embarked on its global expansion plan with the launch of its first wide-body Boeing 787 aircraft. The inaugural flight took off from Delhi to Bangkok today. The milestone was celebrated at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport by IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and his team.

Amenities

Enhanced comfort for long-haul flights

The newly launched Delhi-Bangkok route will be serviced by IndiGo's wide-body aircraft, equipped with IndiGoStretch. This feature will enhance passenger comfort on long-haul flights. The airline also offers specially curated meals by Oberoi Catering Services's chefs and a selection of beverages from Sula Vineyards as part of the IndiGoStretch service, marking its first step toward introducing Indian brands to global travelers.

Fleet expansion

IndiGo to expand fleet with more Boeing 787-9 planes

IndiGo has announced plans to expand its fleet with three more Boeing 787-9 planes. The aircraft will be taken on a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways and will arrive in India in the second half of 2025. The new planes will be used on long-haul international routes, expanding IndiGo's reach beyond its current operations using two wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft leased from Turkish Airlines.

Aircraft layout

Boeing 787-9 planes offer spacious double-aisle layout

The Boeing 787-9 planes come with a roomy double-aisle configuration with 56 IndiGoStretch seats in a 2x3x2 configuration, offering a generous 43-inch seat pitch. The economy section has 282 seats in a comfortable 3x3x3 configuration with a seat pitch of 31-inch. The aircraft will be leased for an initial period of six months, extendable up to 18 months, subject to regulatory approvals.

Strategic alliance

Partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways strengthens international network

IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers said their alliance with Norse Atlantic Airways is key to bolstering their international network and making a mark in the European market. He said this expansion is in line with their strategic commitment to both India and international growth. Elbers also noted the increasing demand for international travel to and from India as the reason behind the airline's expanding global footprint.

Passenger benefits

IndiGo offers enhanced services on Delhi-Bangkok flights

On the Delhi-Bangkok route, IndiGo offers passengers priority check-in, flexible boarding, advance seat selection, zero convenience fee, and an enhanced baggage allowance of 30kg check-in + 12kg cabin baggage. Bookings are now open via IndiGo's direct channels and aggregator websites.
