Mastercard and Google Pay preview biometric payments replacing SMS OTPs
Mastercard and Google Pay previewed a new biometric authentication feature at Mumbai's Global Fintech Fest;
soon, eligible Mastercard cardholders on Google Pay will be able to pay online using their fingerprint or facial recognition instead of those annoying SMS OTPs.
If you have a securely saved eligible Mastercard on Google Pay, this feature should make paying for things like bills, recharges, and shopping way easier.
The rollout depends on which banks join in, but it's set to finish by the end of 2026.
Uses Mastercard CDCVM for device biometrics
This new option uses Mastercard's CDCVM technology to verify you through your device's biometrics.
It could reduce the steps involved in online card payments while providing an alternative to SMS-based authentication.
The feature is optional and will depend on your bank, phone compatibility, and which transactions are supported in Google Pay.
