Meta mandates Sebi verification for investment ads
Meta (the folks behind Instagram and Facebook) is rolling out a new rule for anyone advertising investment or securities products to people in India.
Starting July 31, 2025, advertisers will need to prove they're legit by sharing their SEBI registration details—basically, making it harder for fake finance "gurus" or scammy ads to slip through.
What's the new process?
Advertisers have to submit their SEBI registration info, which will show up on their ads.
If you're eligible, you get a month to finish this process.
The idea is simple: make sure only real, registered players can promote investments.
What if you're an educator?
If you're just teaching about finance (like an educator or trainer), you don't need SEBI registration—but you still have to prove who you are with a government ID or business docs.
Ads that are purely educational skip the SEBI step but still go through identity checks.
Fewer shady offers popping up in your feed
Meta's move follows a nudge from India's market regulator (SEBI) earlier this year after concerns about scams and impersonators online.
This should mean more trustworthy ads and fewer shady offers popping up in your feed.
If an ad was already running before July 31 and gets verified under the new rules, it doesn't need any changes.
