NSDL launches Demat 2.0 blockchain platform using RBI wholesale CBDC
NSDL just rolled out Demat 2.0, a fresh blockchain platform that handles tokenized securities and settles transactions almost instantly using RBI's wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
The launch was announced at Global Fintech Fest 2026 by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey.
Demat 2.0 pilot raised ₹1,025 cr
Demat 2.0 runs with two connected wallets: one for security tokens, one for CBDC. Its atomic settlement means money and bonds swap hands at the same time, reducing settlement risk compared with the existing system.
In its pilot phase, companies like REC Limited, Larsen & Toubro, and IIFL raised ₹1,025 crore through tokenized bonds, no extra accounts needed thanks to existing KYC.
While it's just for bond tokens now, there are plans to expand subject to regulatory approvals and market maturity.
Smart contracts could automate interest payments
The platform could automate things like interest payments and redemptions using smart contracts (if rules allow), making digital finance smoother than ever.
