NTPC to set up India's 1st coal-to-gas plant

Business

NTPC, India's biggest power company, is joining forces with Engineers India Limited to build the country's first plant that turns coal into synthetic natural gas (SNG).
The idea? Take high-ash coal from NTPC's own mines and convert it into cleaner fuel for their gas-based power stations—cutting down on imported fuels and giving a fresh spin to how we use coal.

Why this matters

This project is part of NTPC's "Greening the Coal" mission, which aligns with India's national goal to gasify 100 million tons of coal by 2030 using advanced tech like carbon capture.
With ₹85 billion in government incentives available for coal gasification projects nationwide, this move isn't just about cleaner energy—it also helps keep our electricity grid stable as more renewables come online.
For anyone interested in where India's energy future is headed, this is a big step forward.
