RBI unveils gold reserves in documentary series
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is giving everyone a rare peek into its gold reserves through a new docuseries, "RBI Unlocked: Beyond the Rupee," now streaming on JioHotstar.
The show offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the RBI works to keep India's finances stable, while revealing that it holds about 854 tons of gold.
Why gold reserves matter
The series highlights how RBI stores its gold—12.5kg bricks stacked in secure vaults in Mumbai and Nagpur, with 510 tons kept in India and another 324 tons stored overseas.
An RBI official sums up why this matters: "Countries will rise and fall. Economies will have ups and downs. But gold will always maintain its value."
The docuseries also traces the RBI's evolution over 90 years, aiming to make the bank's work more transparent and relatable for everyone.
