SC to hear VIL plea for AGR dues recalculation
Vodafone Idea (VIL) is back in the Supreme Court, now asking for waivers on interest and penalties tied to its massive adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.
They're hoping for a fresh calculation of what they owe, pointing to earlier court decisions that offered similar relief.
This move builds on their previous request, which only asked for a recalculation—not a full waiver.
Court has put proceedings on hold
The government, which now owns nearly half of VIL after converting dues into equity, isn't opposing a review of these numbers.
The main dispute is over a ₹5,606 crore demand from 2016-17—VIL says this was already settled by the court back in 2019 and shouldn't be reopened.
On top of that, there's another ₹9,450 crore demand from before and after VIL merged with Idea, all adding up to an eye-watering ₹83,400 crore in AGR dues (excluding penalties and interest, which bring the total liability to nearly ₹2 lakh crore).
The court has hit pause on proceedings while it takes a closer look at VIL's plea for relief.
