What's the story

The Department of Posts (DoP) has announced a revision in the tariffs for Speed Post services. The new rates will come into effect from October 1. The move comes after the last tariff revision was made in October 2012. The DoP has also introduced a host of new features including OTP-based secure delivery, online payment facility, SMS-based delivery notifications, real-time delivery updates, and a registration facility for users.

Tariff details

Revised tariff structure for Speed Post

The revised tariff structure for Speed Post services is based on weight and distance. For local deliveries up to 50gm, the charge is ₹19. For deliveries between 51-250gm, the charge ranges from ₹24 to ₹77 depending on the distance. The charges for heavier parcels (251-500gm) also vary according to distance, with a maximum charge of ₹93 for distances above 2,000km.

Additional services

Registration and OTP-based delivery services

The DoP also offers a registration service for Speed Post deliveries, which ensures secure delivery of documents and parcels to the addressee. This service comes at an additional cost of ₹5 per Speed Post item plus applicable GST. The department also provides an OTP-based delivery service where the item is delivered only after successful confirmation of the OTP shared with the delivery staff. This too comes at a cost of ₹5 per Speed Post item plus applicable GST.

Discount details

Discounts on Speed Post tariffs for students, bulk customers

The DoP is also offering a 10% discount on Speed Post tariffs for students. New bulk customers can avail of a special discount of 5%. These discounts are part of the department's efforts to make its services more accessible and affordable to different segments of the population.
