SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey urges outcomes over AUM
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey just told the mutual fund industry to look beyond big numbers and focus on what really matters: how investors actually benefit.
At AMFI's 31st Foundation Day, he pointed out that mutual funds have exploded in size, from around ₹15 lakh crore in July 2016 to about ₹86 lakh crore in July 2026, but said, "Success cannot be measured only by AUM, number of folios or schemes; it must ultimately be measured by investor outcomes," attributed to SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey.
SEBI seeks 12 crore investors
Pandey also pushed for making investing more accessible, especially for women, by aiming for 12 crore investors through better financial education and communication in multiple languages.
He highlighted that women now account for 34% of individual investor AUM.
Plus, SEBI is working on new rules to boost innovation while keeping investor protection strong, including reviewing distributor regulations and ensuring AMCs strengthen internal controls, due diligence, risk communication, and fair treatment of investors, while stepping up efforts to prevent mis-selling and market abuse.
