SK and Amazon invest $5 billion in South Korean data centre
SK Group and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are joining forces to build South Korea's largest data center in Ulsan, backed by a massive $5.1 billion investment.
Construction starts this September, and the center is set to go fully online by 2029 with an initial capacity of 100 megawatts.
The main goal? Boosting AI technology in a big way.
AI-focused data center to boost South Korea's tech landscape
With $4 billion coming from Amazon alone, SK Group wants to eventually scale the facility up to one gigawatt, turning it into a major global hub for AI while supporting local needs.
This project also fits with South Korea's push to grow high-tech industries beyond its main cities—a move President Lee Jae Myung has highlighted as key.
The news sent shares of Korean AI companies like SK Hynix, Kakao, and LG CNS climbing, helping the KOSPI index break past 3,000 points for the first time in years.
