Uber fined €825 million in Netherlands for not notifying drivers
Uber just got slapped with a massive €825 million ($960 million) fine in the Netherlands for deactivating driver accounts across Europe without giving them a heads-up.
Dutch regulators said Uber broke European Union data protection rules by letting algorithms make these calls instead of having real people involved or notifying drivers first.
The incidents happened between 2020 and 2022.
Uber calls fine disproportionate and appeals
This all started from a complaint in France, but landed in the Netherlands since Uber's European headquarters is there.
Officials found Uber didn't follow the law on informing drivers before cutting them off.
Uber isn't happy about the decision, calling the fine "disproportionate" and planning to appeal.
Uber said it contests the decision and the "disproportionate" fine and will appeal.
