What's the story

The recently announced India-US trade deal is expected to help American farmers and rural America, US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has said. The agreement will allow more American agricultural products into India's huge market, increasing prices and injecting cash into rural areas. Rollins thanked US President Donald Trump for "delivering" on this promise in a post on X.

Deficit reduction

Rollins highlighted India's growing population

Rollins highlighted India's growing population as a key market for US agricultural products. She said the new trade deal will go a long way in lowering Washington's agricultural trade deficit with New Delhi, which was $1.3 billion in 2024.

Market access

'Thank you POTUS for delivering for American farmers'

The trade deal, which Trump announced yesterday night, will reduce tariffs on goods from India to 18% from 50%. "Thank you @POTUS for ONCE AGAIN delivering for our American farmers," Rollins said. "New US-India deal will export more American farm products to India's massive market, lifting prices and pumping cash into rural America." Modi expressed his delight at the agreement, saying it would benefit both nations and create opportunities for cooperation.

Oil purchase

What else does the deal entail?

Trump also announced that India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil and increase its imports from the US, possibly Venezuela. The Prime Minister also committed to "BUY AMERICAN," at a much higher level, in addition to over $500 billion of US energy, technology, and agricultural products among many others.
