US layoffs skyrocket with 7 lakh jobs cut in 5 months
Layoffs in the US have soared, with nearly 7 lakh jobs cut just in the first part of 2025—an 80% jump from last year. This number is almost as high as all of 2024 combined.
May alone saw over 93,000 people lose their jobs; while that's a bit less than April, it's still up nearly half compared to last May.
Tech, retail sectors worst hit
Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are leading the cuts, planning to let go of over a lakh employees this year.
In May, tech layoffs rose by 35% from last year. Retail isn't far behind either, with job cuts jumping a massive 274%.
Economic pressures like lower consumer spending and funding cuts are driving these numbers up across sectors—including government jobs—and changes in immigration policies may make things even tougher for foreign-born workers.
