Vodafone Idea shares jump 4% today: What's the reason?
What's the story
Vodafone Idea's shares jumped almost 4% in intraday trading today, amid expectations of relief on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The rise comes after Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government is considering legal frameworks before implementing any relief measures. The minister hinted that an announcement could be made by year-end.
Request pending
Government awaits formal request from Vodafone Idea
Scindia told CNBC-TV18 that the government is waiting for a formal request from Vodafone Idea before proceeding with any relief measures. He said, "Judgment needs to be evaluated from a point of view of what can be done and what cannot be done. We cannot cross the border of the SC judgment."
Anticipated announcement
Relief package likely by year-end
The Telecom Minister said that the government could complete its assessment and issue recommendations within a few weeks. He added that the relief package is likely to be announced by the end of this year. This comes after a favorable order from the Supreme Court on October 27, allowing the government to reconsider additional AGR demands for FY2016-17, and comprehensively reassess all AGR dues including interest and penalty.
