Basu Chatterjee was an Indian film director and screenwriter born on January 10, 1927. After working as an assistant director for many years, Chatterjee eventually made his directorial debut with ‘Sara Akash’ in 1969, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay. Some of his most critically acclaimed films include ‘Piya Ka Ghar’, ‘Baton Baton Mein’, 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla’, 'Chitchor', ‘Khatta Meetha’, ’Chakravyuha’, ‘Apne Paraye’, 'Swami’, and ’Chhoti Si Baat’, among others. Apart from Hindi language films, Chatterjee has also directed many Bengali films, including ‘Hothat Brishti’, ‘Hochcheta Ki’, and 'Hothat Shei Din’. Notably, he has served as a member of the jury at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival in 1977. The majority of his films were light-hearted stories about middle-class families, usually in urban settings, focusing on their marital and love relationships. In 1978, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for ‘Swami’. He died due to an age-related illness at the age of 93 at his Mumbai residence on June 4, 2020.

Legendary film director and screenwriter Basu Chatterjee, known for his realistic and groundbreaking movies such as Rajnigandha, Chitchor, Baton Baton Mein, and Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, passed away on Thursday in Mumbai, due to age-related ailments. He was 90 years old.
