BBC's Diana interview sparks fresh backlash: Charles Spencer blames BBC tactics for "Lethal consequences"

Entertainment

Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, is calling out the BBC again over its infamous 1995 interview with her.
In a new book by former BBC journalist Andy Webb, Spencer is quoted as claiming the broadcaster's use of fake documents and shady tactics didn't just get them the scoop—it also fueled paranoia around Diana and, in his view, played a part in events leading up to her tragic death.

Forged documents & broken trust

Spencer says journalist Martin Bashir used forged bank statements to convince him that people close to Diana were spying on her. This made Diana even more suspicious of those around her.
The BBC has admitted Bashir's actions were wrong and has paid damages to affected staff.

BBC apologizes after investigation

A 2021 independent report found that while Diana might have agreed to an interview anyway, Bashir's deception was key in making it happen.
The BBC publicly apologized for these tactics.

Who is Charles Spencer?

Charles Spencer is Princess Diana's younger brother—a historian and author.
He's been outspoken about how the BBC handled things and often questions how the media treated his sister before her death in 1997.
