Busan awardee 'Shape of Momo's Tribeny Geeta Rai: Interview
Tribeny Geeta Rai's debut film, Shape of Momo, recently picked up two major awards at the Busan International Film Festival—the Taipei Film Commission Award and the Songwon Vision Award.
The Nepali-language film explores how women across generations deal with social expectations.
Rai shared that having a Sikkimese story on such a global stage gave visibility and connected them with audiences who share cultural similarities in Asia.
On the film's story and making process
Shape of Momo follows Bishnu, a young woman returning to her Himalayan village as she tries to balance family pressures with her own independence.
Inspired by Rai's own return to Nandok, East Sikkim, the movie came together thanks to support from her film school friends—especially co-writer and editor Kislay.
Despite tight budgets and limited resources in Sikkim's new film scene, Rai says teamwork and creativity helped bring this heartfelt project to life.
