Nolan shot 'over 2M feet of film' for 'The Odyssey'
What's the story
Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has revealed that he used "over two million feet of film" during the 91-day shoot for his upcoming film The Odyssey. In an interview with Empire, he said a lot of this was shot at sea to capture the grandeur of Homer's ancient Greek epic. The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, among others.
Filmmaking approach
Here's what Nolan said
Nolan explained his decision to shoot on location, saying, "We got the cast who play the crew of Odysseus's ship out there on the real waves, in the real places." "And yeah, it's vast and terrifying and wonderful and benevolent, as the conditions shift. We really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people."

More about 'The Odyssey'
The Odyssey will premiere on July 17, 2026. It follows Odysseus (Damon) and his mythical encounters during his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. Decades ago, Nolan was to direct Troy (2004), based on Homer's Iliad but helmed Batman Begins (2005) instead. "What I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I'd grown up with...I'd never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that...a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do," Nolan added.
