Sanchita Ugale's death: AICWA writes to CM, seeks high-level probe

The entertainment industry has been plunged into shock following the untimely demise of actor Sanchita Ugale. The 22-year-old was found dead at her residence in Nalasopara, Mumbai, on Sunday (June 14), with the police stating that she died by suicide. In the wake of Ugale's death, the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, calling for a transparent, high-level investigation into the incident.

AICWA demands inquiry into death
AICWA President Suresh Shyamlal Gupta urged Maharashtra CM Fadnavis to request him to launch an inquiry into Ugale's death. In a statement, the cine body said, "At a stage when her career was steadily progressing, and she was creating a strong identity for herself in the industry, this heartbreaking development has raised serious questions that deserve a fair, transparent, and comprehensive investigation."

Mental health concerns
Safety, well-being, and support systems for artists
The AICWA has also urged the Maharashtra government to form a committee to look into the rising number of deaths and mental health issues among the members of the entertainment industry. It added, "The safety, well-being, and support systems available to artists and workers must be reviewed urgently." To recall, Ugale's brother, Akash Satish Ugale, alleged that she was under immense pressure from the industry before her death.
Legal proceedings
Police are investigating all angles in the case
Ugale's father, Machhindra Ugale, has also lodged a complaint. Reports suggest that police have filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Meanwhile, a close friend of Ugale, Indraxi Kanjilal, has accused actor Ujjwal Sharma of harassment in connection with her death. The police have assured that all angles of the case are being investigated.

Ugale was a well-known face on television, especially for her role as Diya Tandon on the popular Zee TV show Kumkum Bhagya. She also appeared as Ruchita Jaitley in Wagle Ki Duniya and played the lead role of Sukoon in Dangal TV's Dilwali Dulha Le Jayegi. Apart from television, Ugale also worked in a few films and OTT projects, including Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout starring Manoj Bajpayee, and Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava.
