What's the story

The Delhi High Court has issued an interim order to protect the personality rights of actor R Madhavan. The court on Monday restrained several websites and online platforms from using his name or images for commercial purposes without his consent. Additionally, it has ordered the removal of certain obscene content uploaded on the internet using artificial intelligence and deepfake technology.

Legal proceedings

Court to issue detailed interim order in Madhavan's case

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora announced that a detailed interim order will be issued in the case. The court said, "Issue injunction qua sale of merchandise qua defendants 1, 3 and 4 of the list and qua defendant 2 on the ground of obscenity." Senior advocate Swathi Sukumar, representing Madhavan, argued that one defendant had created a fake movie trailer for Kesari 3 using deepfake and AI-generated content impersonating Madhavan.

Pre-litigation actions

Madhavan's legal team had approached social media platforms

Before filing the suit, Madhavan's legal team had already approached the social media platforms to remove the infringing material. The Dhurandhar actor is the latest celebrity to get the court's help in putting a stop to artificial impersonation online.
