Bollywood veteran Dharmendra, who passed away on Monday at 89, was cremated at Mumbai's Pawan Hans crematorium. The ceremony was attended by close family members and friends from the industry. His daughter Esha Deol was seen visibly distraught during this difficult time. Actor Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Santoshi were among the first to arrive for the last rites. Meanwhile, filmmaker Karan Johar, who directed Dharmendra in 2023's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, shared an emotional note online.

A look at his illustrious career

Dharmendra, fondly known as the "He-Man of Bollywood," had a career spanning over six decades. He made his acting debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and went on to star in more than 300 films including Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and Dharam Veer. His movies like Mera Karam Mera Dharam, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, and The Burning Train have become classics.

Dharmendra's personal life and legacy

Born in Punjab on December 8, 1935, Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur at 19 in 1954. The couple has four children - actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and two daughters, Vijeta and Ajeeta. He married his co-star Hema Malini in 1980 with whom he has two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. His last film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya was released in 2024 while he will be seen posthumously in Ikkis releasing on December 25.
